An original, custom-designed font set for the Apple Macintosh, intended to provide legibility and variety, despite the design constraint of a very small pixel grid for the letterforms. The fact that the fonts were able to be proportionally spaced (not all characters the same width) was a path-breaking opportunity. The boldest font, Chicago, was used as the Macintosh system font from 1984-1997. Cairo, a font made of small images, provided a way to use the keyboard to mix text and pictures as early as 1984.
