PARK DESIGN FOR THE 21st CENTURY (2008-2011)
PROJECT SUMMARY
The Design Trust produced the blueprint for sustainable design, construction, and maintenance for NYC’s 29,000 acres of parkland, that NYC Department of Parks and Recreation adopted as best practices and third of a suite of sustainability guidelines. Part how-to manual and part advocacy tool, High Performance Landscape Guidelines: 21st Century Parks for NYC, reflect a paradigm shift in thinking about the park system as vital green infrastructure.
High Performance Landscape Guidelines has been widely embraced by the local design
community, earning accolades from the New York Chapter of American Society of Landscape Architects and Municipal Art Society. Other cities across the country, such as Minneapolis, have drawn on this comprehensive resource. From planted traffic islands to urban forests, the Guidelines promote cleaner air and water, increased biodiversity, lowered heat island effect, reduced energy usage, and expanded opportunities for relaxation, recreation and environmental education for all New Yorkers.
