Courtyard Design
An-najah National University Campus
Nablus, Palestine
Description:
The courtyard between the faculty of engineering and the faculty of science at NNU connects the main entrance of the campus with buildings at the eastern part of it. However, the courtyard was originally meant to be the main entrance of the faculty of engineering, students prefer to access the building from the side facing the street. It’s in-tended to redesign the courtyard to a better and more efficient use.
This proposal involves adding new structures and elements arranged to give a three dimensional outdoor of terraces for both buildings, with more capacity, attractiveness and fluid circulation. The design proposes three floors of terraces overlapping above a vegetated ground to create comfortable and shaded area. This would mainly convert the original use of the courtyard from being a pathway to a place of relaxing and taking a break where students can spend time together. Raw concrete and wood are also used for more welcoming space.
