UX - Accessibility
Creation of a tool to help find the right interface based on the user’s characteristics
ENSC - World of interface w/ Julie Bebien, Lauren Thevin - 7 months ( October 2010 - April 2011 )
Key Points :
- Interfaces
- Accessibility/Disabilities
- HTML/CSS/PHP/SQL
The project :
As new technologies are becoming integrated into our daily lives, the key design problems are around the interfaces to those technologies. One of the first project that I did at the ENSC was to create a tool that mapped different interfaces to users according to their characteristics and/or disabilities.
What I did
Research :
Research, analysis and classification of a broad range of interfaces => Interfaces sorted by types (input, output or both), by constraints of use and by which sense is employed (sight, hearing, touch).
Inventory of human characteristics, disabilities and constraints.
User interviews :
User interviews to capture insights and have a better understanding of their habits and the different approaches that they may have.
Implementation :
I developed a web tool (HTML/CSS/PHP/SQL) that allows you to find the adapted interfaces for the users, depending on their characteristics and disabilities. It also works the other way around. We also added some recommendations for the use of some interfaces.
The result
This project was an opportunity for me to build a usability tool with my technical knowledge. It helped me have a better knowledge of all the existing physical interface and to be aware of a large amount of disabilities that a UX Designer has to take into account. The prototype that we created could be improved by an expert and be a useful engineering tool for designers.
