From the 1890s through World War 2 the Marin Headlands were the home of military fortifications, bunkers, and batteries. In the 1970s the area became the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. But you can still see the decaying ruins of the military installations, along with some brilliant views of that famous bridge, and the city whose association it always brings to mind.
