This invitation was designed for the National Portrait Gallery's public triennial portrait competition – the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition Exhibition Opening. Every three years, artists living and working all across the United States are invited by the museum to submit one of their recent portraits to a panel of experts. The selected artworks reflect the compelling and diverse approaches contemporary artists are using to tell the American story through portraiture. Because the portraits are revealed at the exhibition opening, the invitation could not use any actual images of artwork but still had to relate to the Portrait Gallery. The design incorporates the pattern from the National Portrait Gallery's iconic wavy glass ceiling in the Kogod Courtyard, vibrant colors on the inside and iridescent foiling on the front and back of the invitation.
