Local Food Market + Public Square | Renovation

Parish Church Sint Gillis Binnen was built in the first half of the 13th century in gothic style in Dendermonde, Belgium. It has a very central location in the town and it is adjacent to a small park which hosts a monument and several seats. Although, the church and the park have a great potential for the social life of the residents, it is neglected. The church doesn't function anymore, thus it is empty all the time. The park on the other hand host people, however it doesn't provide proper seating, shading or interaction with the monument. The project is designed to make this central location more involved in the city's social life by some interventions. The monument is removed as it interrupts the continuity of the façade in the background in the square. A new monument is designed that provide seating and memorial activities. More seating aligned with the wall of the church is added in order to create a connection between the park and the church. The church is transformed to host a food market on certain days. The sacred parts of the church are kept untouched.
