Paving and Milling Asphalt

PCI Industries, a construction business based in Mount Vernon, New York, handles various projects for public works entities, large developers, and municipalities around New York City. In addition to performing site construction services, PCI Industries also offers paving and milling services to its clients.

Of these two processes, paving is more straightforward. Also known as asphalt paving, the process refers to covering a surface with an asphalt-gravel mix. The goal of this work is creating a flat and even surface, and a heavy roller is run over the new asphalt after it’s spread out to smooth the surface and compress the material. Unfortunately, asphalt wears out over time due to exposure to sunlight, traffic, and weather.

When asphalt becomes damaged, it may be so rough that a thin new layer of asphalt cannot be applied. In this case, construction engineers my smooth the old asphalt by subjecting it to a milling process. This consists of grinding down some of the old asphalt using a milling machine. Generally, the damaged asphalt is removed to a level that is sound and allows workers to smooth the surface with a new layer of asphalt. However, if the asphalt is significantly damaged, the old material may be entirely removed down to the support or base material, such as concrete.

Once the old paving material is removed, new paving is put in its place. Meanwhile, the old asphalt is recycled and made into usable material once again.
