Monolithic Branching Structures
Digital fabrication research + product design

MONOLITHIC BRANCHING STRUCTURES are iterative geometries shaped by physics-based form-finding. The computational design explores minimal material structural frames with the intent to 3d-print the primary structure of atypical spatial shapes. Input points around a specified volume organize the branching structure and are fine-tuned with bowing in/out the branches, tapering the nodes, scaling up/down the node knob, and thickening or thinning up the profile section for each branch to control structural loads. Furthermore, the process allows for adjustment to different scales.  Prototypes have been 3d-printed and demonstrate the resulting form through the entire digital design-to-fabrication process.
