The Lozenge Bench
I have for years been fascinated with modular, interlocking structures, and so given the time with this project to explore a little I decided to turn my initial concept of repeating curves toward complete modularity. The result was a piece of furniture requiring neither screws or adhesives which can be assembled in 30 minutes and disassembled in 20. It has the length and structural integrity to seat four people (five if they really squeeze in). Additionally, the parts are formed to use wood as efficiently as possible. The ovular modules are each composed of two interlocking parts so that they could be cut from a smaller piece of wood and be shipped more easily while retaining their 7.5’ length in assembly. The project was completed, from initial ideation to sanding and assembly, in 7 weeks, and the bench was displayed in the MICA FYE Art Show.
