A Brief History of the Green Bay Packers'

Carol Jacobson of Bismarck, North Dakota, is an avid sports fan. In addition to following local sports throughout the Bismarck area, Carol Jacobson maintains interest in teams, such as the Duke University Blue Devils and the Green Bay Packers.

The Green Bay Packers joined professional football in 1921 and have won 13 championships, including four Super Bowls out of five Super Bowl appearances. The team’s four Super Bowl era championships rank fifth among the league’s 28 franchises.

Between 1960 and 1965, Green Bay secured three championships from four National Football League (NFL) Championship games. Following their 1965 win, the team’s ninth overall, Green Bay transitioned seamlessly into the Super Bowl era, winning rings in 1966 and 1967. Green Bay not only won the first ever Super Bowl, a 35-10 win over the Kansas City Chiefs of the American Football League (AFL), but became the first franchise to repeat as Super Bowl champions, a feat that has been repeated only six times.

Following an extensive post-season drought, the Packers returned to the big dance following the 1996 NFL season and added a third Super Bowl by way of a 35-21 win over the New England Patriots. Green Bay nearly managed to defend a Super Bowl title for a second time, but suffered a narrow 31-24 loss to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXII.

The franchise’s fourth and most recent Super Bowl victory came as something of a surprise. Following a middling 10-6 regular season in 2010, the Packers, led by quarterback Aaron Rodgers, defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, the Atlanta Falcons, and the Chicago Bears to reach Super Bowl XLV. In a close game, the Packers held off the Pittsburgh Steelers, 31-25.
