A competition winning design for innovative, affordable housing
Lios Gorm - A green place to live

The design of Lios Gorm utilises modern methods of construction to minimise embodied energy and maximise quality.  The breathing roof, walls and floor cassettes are manufactured under factory conditions (with windows, cellulose fibre insulation and service trunking incorporated) and the pre-fabricated enhanced service cores are designed to incorporate all of the electrical, water, and ventilation systems.  Off-site construction minimises waste, utilises modern stock management techniques, maximises quality and avoids delay due to adverse weather.

The houses are designed to maximise solar gain from the southerly aspects (frame with glass infill) and minimise heat loss to the northern aspects (thick wall with carefully placed window openings).

High embodied energy elements such as the concrete foundations and masonry substructure are minimised by offsetting them under the building by 500mm.  In combination with the lightweight construction and single leaf support walls, the volume of concrete required is reduced by 54%
