One of the things I love about Japan is how every corner radiates a mood. It gives me the sense of "alone-ness", but not necessarily loneliness. They're the corners you don't notice at first, but are worth stopping for to take a picture. They show calmness despite noise. I was actually weighing between using either "discreet" (inconspicuous) or "discrete" (distinct), but perhaps that's why they're homophones—Japan's streets and landscapes are inconspicuously beautiful on their own, and that is what makes them stand out. They are their own liminal spaces.
