Super Studio
Final Drawing
As we know the radical group Superstudio created a notion which made them popular in every generation especially the millennials. The notion they posed was of anti- architecture. They realized the need of that notion in a time when no one even thought of it. This in return brought a lot of backlash on them. The works of Superstudio truly defies all the other notions of mundane architecture. In a time when Archigram was producing something similar, a lot of debates broke in to discuss the similarities between the works of Archigram and superstudio, meanwhile, where Archigram was trying to reimagine architecture and the infidelity of context; negating contexts, the Superstudio with their publications like Supersurface and continuous monument. Even though the works they produced sound ‘architectural’ but they were anti reality. Perhaps even Superstudio’s core criticism of architecture and Modernism, was the idea that an architectural practice could be conceptual and theoretical, concerned with cultural criticism rather than the production of buildings. Superstudio’s aim was to float an idea that a critique on the prevailing architecture could mean, imagining a surface, just a singular surface with no predetermined architecture style (classical, modern, gothic etc). These utopian experiments in their core fact started a lot of different movements and encouraged more young collectives to come forward. The technique I have tried to apply is rather a conjecture. I have tried to think of architecture as something that feels like architecture but differs in its purpose. I have tried to imagine with the help of collage making; a scenario in which, the way, Superstudio’s grid forms an omnipresence, a continuos structure spreads throughout the city with no notion of place, it just tends to create a space and at a certain point it even diminishes the difference between space and place. It creates a 3Dimensionality but at the same time, there is no roof or walls of this structure, the thin planes combined with each other in Cartesian planes, create a continuous structure everywhere which is some kind of architecture but not related to any of our predetermined notions. This creates a possibility and a flexibility to the users of space to make anything they want by adding more planes with the existing planes to create roofs, walls and partitions, the flexibility in developing new dwellings and public spaces could lead to a new architecture style, which is same and yet different for everyone at the same time.
