At the University of Illinois, I collaborated with a team of software developers to create custom web applications for our faculty, staff, and students. I started by meeting our users, working to understand their needs through in-person interviews and onsite visits to their workplaces. With this information in hand, I'd work internally to draft requirements with our Service Owners and developers. Next, I created low-fidelity wireframes using Balsamiq Mockups to test out design concepts with real users and to get feedback from stakeholders. Finally, I collaborated with the development team to iteratively create the software itself; when needed, I'd create high-fidelity prototypes in Photoshop (like for the Application Template below), but often we'd get right into Scrum-style rapid development styles where I consulted with developers on the fly as they developed my designs (such as the Custom Application below).
Application Template - I redesigned the template for the custom web applications created by my organization, Technology Services, the central IT organization at the University of Illinois. Using the brand guidelines (including color palette and logo usage) from our Creative Services office, I designed this template to have room for an application title, informational footer, and proper U of I branding. For reference, the previous application template is displayed in the Custom Application project below.
Custom Application - I worked on over 30 distinct products at University of Illinois; one example is a custom application we built to allow faculty to request an instruction space in our learning management system that was customized to their needs. This automated, self-service system allowed faculty to provision spaces day or night, and cut down on expensive, time-consuming consultations with our staff. I created the mockups below during one phase of an 8-phase project to iteratively add features and enhance existing features as we got feedback from usability evaluations.
