Internship with Design Innovation and Research centre

This page is to document and demonstrate the work I was doing during my internship with the UTS Design Innovation and Research Centre (DIRC). I came to DIRC asking about an internship after learning about what they call "designing out crime". It was very interesting to see the type of work that was being conducted at DIRC and what ‘designing out crime’ looks like in practice. Also it was insightful to be able to see different types of designers such as strategic designers, a position I hadn't heard of before. I learnt that the processes they use to ‘design out crime’ come much from the work of Kees Dorst. Such as ‘frame creation’, which I was introduced to on my first day. Frame creation provides a guideline to how they go about projects.

The first project I assisted with was helping Legal Aid NSW redo their offices to improve client and staff experience. I was tasked with planning the lobby furniture. By this point much of the research was completed and an idea of how the space would most effectively be used had been devised. What I needed to do was translate the design intentions into design guidelines. I used technical drawings and Adobe Illustrator to make a mood board and used Pinterest to keep track of internet links. I also drew up possible cutout seating solutions.
Another project I assisted with was for the Office of responsible gambling NSW, aimed at encouraging responsible gambling amongst 18 - 25 year olds. I collated available research that would be helpful for the team. This required looking broadly at relevant areas of research, which would allows us a better ability to re-frame the problem space. I was also able to learn about and assist with workshops. The purpose being to learn about different people’s thoughts about gambling and gain different ways of looking at the problem with the goal of being able to better re-frame the problem. I recorded the thoughts of the subjects with extensive mind maps (pictured above).
