focus
While watching the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey", my fascination was the HAL9000 computer
and then especially the moment of him being 'disconnected' and 'dying'. With several obstructions,
I created a series of posters, each focussing on a different aspect of this movie moment.

poster 1: focus on audio
HAL9000 sings Daisy Bell while being disconnected. The audio of the distortion of his voice is an interesting factor to translate into typography. Testing how I could visualize this distortion the best.

poster 2: focus on system
OBSTRUCTION: SINGLE LAYERED
I focussed on HAL's system and wondered how his "crash message" would look. I chose for the Windows blue screen message as a starting point and wrote HAL's own crash message. To show the "quality downgrade" of his system, I photographed the blue screen with a camera. Then photographed that photograph. And again, and again, until there was barely something left.

poster 3: focus on visual
OBSTRUCTION: UNEDITED PHOTOGRAPHY ONLY & SERIF TYPEFACES ONLY
We were asked to pick two obstructions out of a list of choices. I chose the obstructions of using unedited photography and serif typefaces only (since we all seem to connect sans serif with space-like movies...).
To symbolize HAL's disconnection / death, I tried to capture the motion of it. The slowly dying of the machine. But how do you capture this 'motion' in a picture? I chose to play with shutter speed and covered a candle with a red plastic cup. The fire, ofcourse, suffocated, just like the system of HAL did. I took a picture with slow shutter, which in fact captured the whole process of the candle going out. This experiment became my series for the last posters. It's too awesome that photography can cause these beautiful unexpected effects.

audio poster: focus on sound
OBSTRUCTION: SHORT AUDIO FRAGMENT ONLY
Next up is a audio poster, which I connected to my second poster; what I did there with image, I did here with audio. Recording the sound, recording that recording, and so on, till it's unrecognizable. So intriguing what kind of distortion is appearing in the sound! Make sure your speakers are not too loud...
