DISTILLED
[dih-stild] : make pure; draw something out — this is the definition that embodies the medium, technique of production, and idea behind this piece. The initial sculpture was carved and assembled out of wood and wax which became the mold for the aluminum to be cast. A wash of black ink was used to emphasize the natural surface of the unrefined aluminum in the final cast. The sculpture ultimately explores the relationship between purity and impurity and asks whether or not the two ideas are equivalent. Distilled not only refers to the process of metal casting but the process of producing abstract thoughts within the mind.
