SOMA District, San Francisco, CA

This project brings new life to a rundown area of San Francisco's South of Mission Area (SOMA). The twisting of the building in plan serves as the primary strategy for organizing program and opening up the site to a new array of uses and users. Public space is created at street level and in the form of a large roof garden/sundeck to encourage a greater presence of people on and around the site while a double skin of glass and perforated metal ensures transparency throughout, increasing safety as well as the perception of safety in addition to providing building energy-performance benefits. A diagrid structure facilitates and visually amplifies the twisting of the building, which rotates away from the tall neighboring structure to the east in order to allow sunlight to penetrate to the public areas and into the building, and extends up past the level of the roof to serve as a windshield for the sundeck. Circulation follows the twist of the building, sticking to the edge of the interior space as it ascends all the way to the roof deck. Alternating panels of glass and perforated metal correspond to the varying privacy needs of the program.
