FEAR, a multiple award winning film about faith and trust in the fellow man. Written and Directed by Kinyua Kamau starring Raphael Reboul and Andrian Marker. The film was screened at Le Cinematheque Française where it won Best Editing and Best Screenplay.
The film begins in a secluded parking lot in the middle of the night. Returning late from work, Jim is interrupted by Frank who says his car has been broken into, his mother is dying and he doesn't have enough gas to reach her.
Initially Jim refuses to believe Frank but as time goes by and he speaks to his brother on the phone, his stance changes and he starts believing him again and gives him enough money to get to his dying mother.
His apprehensions however get the better of him when he asks Frank to return the cash or he'll call the police. Frank breaks down and Jim is left to dwell in his own doubt.
Finally, he succumbs to the humanity in himself and gives Frank the money in good faith. Frank tells him to trust people more often which hits Jim's sense of pride.
The film bounces around the trustworthiness of Frank and how he could be lying or telling the truth. Based on a true story, you wouldn't expect anything less. The main challenge here was to keep the viewer at the edge of their seat with the juggling of faith. Overall, I believe it shows us the nature of the society we live in where the amount of fear dictates the amount of faith.
