The Juncture Of The Eye And The Mind

2006-7 The Juncture Of The Eye And The Mind
In this project, the main issues that underpin the thinking process behind my practice deal with the gaze as an indication of the complexity of tensions connecting the subject with the object, the viewer with the painting, the I with the Other.
The issue of the relationship between the seeing ‘I’ and the seen ‘You’ is at the core of my research debate. Through my practice I pose the question of ‘Who sees and who is seen?’ Who is projecting on whom? Reversion, Desire: this is the itinerary, based on Lacan’s ideas that I will follow to investigate the gaze.  The important idea that knowledge of others is also knowledge of oneself adds to my analysis of portraiture the psychological element of my painting process of representing the ‘Other’.
The concept of the gaze, le regard, has become popular with the rise of postmodern philosophy. I am interested in the theories of how the gaze characterizes and displays the relationships between the subjects by looking and also how the gaze signifies a psychological relationship of power, in which, according to Jonathan Schroeder, ‘the gazer is superior to the object of the gaze’.
