My concentration explores the evolution of Asian women through culture, tradition, and history. It focuses on different women from different time periods representing their country. I wanted to encompass a story in each of the women and their role in that time period. This concentration is important to me because as an East Asian women myself, I have always felt that Asian representation is needed in a society that rarely acknowledges it. I am very proud of my culture and where I come from.Through this project, I wanted to explore the similarities and differences of diversities and expand upon my knowledge of different cultures other than my own. I want to be able to showcase the importance of
Asian representation and express my ideas through painting.
My pieces are focused on four countries: China, Japan, Korea, and the Philippines. These pieces are women represented from every country during a different time period. The women I painted embody their role during which time period they are from and the story they tell. Each woman has a story, a personality, and emotions. Usually, the woman holds an expression in which captures their character as a whole and how it correlates to the country and time period they represent. The way I add the traditional portion to the artwork is by including three-dimensional materials that enhance the depiction of the country such as image 4 where I used a real hand fan to represent a Geisha woman in Japan. Not only did I add a key feature of their tradition, but I also embedded the story of a Geisha woman. There is a visible transition with my pieces as the evolution takes into effect through the women. The way I allude to the evolution of woman is the first time period being before the 1900's. For example, painting 1 is a woman from China during the dynasty period. The second time period is during the 1900's like painting 2 is from the 1920's. The last time period is set on the modern age meaning the present times like painting 6 which depicts a modern high school student. I chose this certain concept in order to convey and compare the development of the women.
