Volos Student Center

The Volos Student Center is a solution to the spread campus of the University of Thessaly, Volos in Volos, Greece. Located on a currently empty and purposeless lot with extremely high real estate value on the popular Mavrokordatou pedestrian street and surrounded by real estate that has not been taken care of, the goal of the project was based on revitalizing the neighborhood block and extending the success of the pedestrian path further west. This extension allowed further connections to the waterfront path, as well as another path to the north.

The building itself looked to become an icon of sustainable construction and lifestyle for the people of Volos. In a city where trends and young people can be all that is visible, this building projects out of a glowing atrium that houses the administration of the University in one central location. The projection houses alternative style student housing is visible to the population and adds an importance of communal interaction. The form was derived from solar paths in order to minimize summer heat gain.
