Recce of Peckham Levels
On Monday we all went to Peckham Levels to curate for exhibition taking place on Friday the 30th November. As a group we came Peckham levels with 13 images and the layout we came with looked like this. When looking at the space we had we realised hanging the five images at the top would not really fit in with the rest of the exhibition and would be too far in front of the images on the wall to look good as a whole.
Given the space that we had we also realised that this was too many images to have and we were told to refine our images down so that we had two images that we had taken each. Which we did and the images that we picked are the ones shown below. We chose to have four portraits and four exteriors in order to show what the community centred around the Albany and the market is like. Some of these portraits will feature text beside them, with quotes from the interviews we had with the community members featured in the photographs. The photographs of the market display how busy it gets and how even after over 100 years, the market still brings in a great influx of people. Essentially this is supposed to show that even though Deptford is changing and new developments such as new flats and apartments are being built, some things will carry on and stay the same. Also the community garden and Thai Chi sessions show that the community stand by each other and participate in things together which I feel is really important for somewhere undergoing gentrification.

Initially it was very difficult to edit our 13 images down to 8 but is something we need to get used to doing as we progress as photographers. Each of us believed that all 13 were important in trying to tell the story we wanted. Nevertheless, we later realised that we could still show the same thing and put the same ideas across through the 8 images that we had chosen.
When we got given our section we measured the width of our space which worked out to be 3metres 40. We then worked out how big an a2 image would be which is 42cm by 59cm and we marked this on the wall with blue tac to get a real feel for how big this would look. From here we started to place some images on the wall and decide how we wanted to display them and what sizes they all would be. The layout for how we originally planned on displaying them is posted below.
Originally we went for a layout like this, however instead of the smaller images being a3 we decided on a4 to fit in with the space we had. Once we had decided on this layout we were informed that it would not fit in with what the other groups were doing due to the fact they had less images so their layout was a lot simpler. So from this we plan to take away one of the 8 images and make our layout more simple to correspond with what the other groups were doing. We are going to bring all 8 images when we come to set up for the exhibition and decide on the day what works best as a whole. In the end our final layout was this one, as shown below. This is much more simple so should fit in with what the other groups are doing.
