Topographical maps

An exploration of contour maps.

A contour map is a map showing topographic features, usually by means of contour lines.
I came across some artwork online of hand drawn topographical maps, which I found very interesting. The idea of depth being implied over the distance between lines fascinated me. There's a certain gentle flow to these simple landscapes that let the mind wander. I think its the fact that true topographical maps show the beauty in the natural form of the earth or its the complex system of mapping a landscape purely form lines that makes them appealing. I decided to create some of my own using Cinema4D. These landscapes are fictional and are created using the landscape tool in Cinema4D. The aim of this project was to explore how to create these maps myself and also to try and to put my own creative spin on the design. the results of which came from layering the same map on top of itself but having one flattened down and the other showing the 3 - dimensional form that it is based on. The colours used are for aesthetics but do give the piece an anaglyph style finish which Id like to explore more.
