Final Sculpture
Description: This sculpture is intended to be an interactive piece where participants can sit on the bench and by doing so can experience the tension between order and chaos. The space is designed to seat two people in relative comfort, however by doing so the tension is increased by proximity to the chaotic wood shapes.
The sculpture allows the participant to ignore the chaos when seated alone or at the far end depicting the ease of ignorance many have access to through modern life. Despite the ability to ignore the chaos it is always present and is unchanged by our inability to acknowledge it. Similarly many social, economic, and interpersonal issues can seemingly be ignored with little effort.
Critique Notes/Insights: Craftsmanship overall is good including the chaotic features. There is a clear transition between the orderly side and chaotic side without seeming unnatural or too abrupt. Because of the material, the chaotic side does remind one of roots and the overall length of the bench accentuates that overall feeling. Chaotic features could be larger to better balance the piece.

Prototype
Prototype of final project done in wood. The final piece will be a functioning wood bench when viewers can interact by sitting. There will be a tension between and clear imbalance with the orderly side and disorderly side which is intended to induce discomfort or anxiety while siting. The legs of the orderly side will be standard legs while the disorderly side will be harder to spot the legs. The narrative is to never be complacent in your comfort because disorder is always there, so we must find a balance in that reality and be able to find happiness with what we are given.
Prototype Sketches
Using limited materials (Wood, String, Mesh Fabric) to build the final project, 10 Prototype sketches represent the overall themes.
Rapid Prototype War & Peace
Using limited material and limited time, this rapid prototype is made from a variety of items including bamboo skewers, mesh fabric, toothpicks, string, elastic and hot glue. The materials were chosen to depict the jagged mountain ranges that can provide peace when set against the cloud filled background, however the toothpicks are breaking through the fabric to represent a spear piercing through the peace.
