When we think about design, we usually relate it to the end result, a product, a service or an experience. I agree with the author that design is more effective as a process, which we have to go through rather than just find ourselves with the final result; that came sooner than expected. The learning is a part of the journey, so to speak. Keeping an eye, looking for the opportunities, where is the excitement and what is the next big idea?
Many designers feel constrained rather than liberated, when designing something in the context of sustainability. It sort of relates to the “paradox of design,” which is to create a design that fundamentally creates more solutions rather than causing more problems for the environment. His point on the combination of design and imagination to create a better future is critical for how we think about the creative process. Furthermore, how design, when putted into specialized use of some form can become the practice of the ultimate freedom.
