 With the development of transit systems and real estate, cities are being taken over by bigger gestures such as intertwining highway structure, skyscrapers as well as industrial facilities. However, between the gaps where those volumes meet, there are also more and more leftover space being created and more than often overlooked. Today, density has become one of the biggest issues mankind is facing and it’s vital to develop the seams of opportunities we can find. Located under I-405 between NW Lovejoy St. and NW Kearney St, the site connects the Pearl District with the Alphabet neighborhood. With the streetcar transit along the north side of the site on Lovejoy and the east and west edges are active bike routes, this plot that provides potential for public gathering is currently mainly occupied by parking. 

HONEYCOMB project starts with a basic module of cuboctahedron with an edge 15 ft long. Each specific unit is a transformation of the basic module, specifically tailored to accommodate different programs including but not limited to transit waiting area, market-stands and cafe, outdoor green terraces, bike pathway and most importantly, community center with amenities such as learning centers for the homeless as well as short-term housing units. 

The module would be built on a metal framework, the facades could be made from metal mesh panels, solid metal or left open to accommodate different programs’ spatial requirements. Like the name “honeycomb” suggests, the project is an organic system that is transformable and flexible, it can be adapted and inserted into different seams of leftover space in the city and grow to feed the needs of the specific site and the needs of society.
