Interface Engineering Branding

Interface Engineering in Portland, Ore., with a LEED Platinum building behind them and a growing reputation for sustainable built environments, needed to update their brand to better communicate their innovative thinking and also reach their ideal clients. Among their needs was a template for producing in-house proposals, letterhead systems for global offices and tradeshow graphics for their expertise areas.

Services included:
• Brand strategy
• Logo update
• Design for postcards, proposals, letterhead systems
• Print management
Above: Allegro Design singled out a phrase from brochure copy—thanks to copywriter Tom Vandel of Les Overhead—that communicated the essence of Interface's commitment to smart building design and incorporated it into business papers and other communications materials.
Above: New proposal covers featured a die-cut window. This allowed for a high-quality solution to customize proposals for specific clients and industries while reducing cost by allowing for in-house binding. There were several inspirations behind the general visual approach. They had to appeal to the aesthetic sensibilities of architecture firms to better position themselves. Because what engineers do is largely felt but not seen, the blurred color field (appearing in different colors across the brand) gave a sense of building climate—warm or cold. The hazy color fields also suggested energy, water, air—the systems addressed by the engineer. We also incorporated sketches and drawings as background texture emphasize the design thinking and planning part of the process.
Above: An example of a proposal template page. Templates included multiple layout options for case studies and detailed style sheets, allowing the client to cascade their copy for automatic formatting.
Above: A style guide rounded out the brand overhaul to be used by marketing departments in Interface's multiple office locations.
