Hidden Treasures: Bauhaus Dessau

5 fonts, abandoned when the Bauhaus Dessau design school was emptied out by force 80 years ago, revisited and completed by modern students headed up by the legendary Erik Spiekermann.

Challenge 1: Logo
Initially I wanted to reflect the straights and curves of the letters by setting them against the rounded background pieces; the angled cutout lines were added to break up the design and because it was reminiscent of the Bauhaus building itself.

Ultimately I didn't like the way it looked - comments during the live stream included 'pipes' and 'like crayons', plus the straight up-and-down look wasn't really Bauhaus. So I removed the top and bottom ends and created this semi-3D look instead, which even more closely resembles the building whilst also being much more bauhaus in it's aesthetic.

The design below won the Adobe Live Stream Challenge on the 12th of June.
This was a second entry, because I was a bit tired of just 3 colours - a bit of fun!
Watched a documentary about the Bauhaus building, this was what came out. The green colour variation is based on, ah, the marker pens I had to hand at the time. The red version is colours grabbed from an actual bauhaus painting.
Challenge 2: Posters
After a bit of reading and browsing, thought I might try making something a bit more interesting. Kandinsky seems to have done several exploratory paintings which start with a background colour and then juxtapose various geometric shapes and lines in contrasting and complimentary colours overtop of that colour. First and second draft - the left version was my initial attempt based on my sketch, but after I added the wording it seemed better tilted the other way, so it reads left-to-right more effectively.

The third version was supposed to improve the readability of the text, but I also got into some more elements to give it a bit more energy.
