Shades of Death: Abandoned. Alienated. Hollowed.

One of the best areas in Houston for street scenes is Third Ward, Houston. I chose this historic neighborhood because it’s transitioning from an African American neighborhood with people of diverse income to a gentrified neighborhood of New Age Houston Hipsters. Therefore, with my Samsung Galaxy 8+, I chose to feature an abandoned nightclub, Shady Oak Grove, located on 2011 McGowen Street. It reminded of makeshift shack, full of blues players and sweaty dancers from a 80s or 90s movie. Perhaps, set on a rural road in a small town. Then, I rode down the street to Ralston’s Discount Liquor, which was featured in the movie Jason’s Lyric (1994). Then, I took photographs of three abandoned stores on Emancipation drive: a pink storefront, a green storefront, and a white grocery store. All of the photos were taken around Friday@5pm (6/8). I rode in the passenger side, as my husband AJ drove slowly drove by the sites that I wanted to capture with my camera. However, I stood out of the car to take the photo of the green building, advertising Donny Hathaway live at the Astrodome, on July 8, in 1972. After I took my photos, I used the filters in my Samsung Galaxy 8+ to create various effects, but I didn’t use any other processing apps. For the Shady Oak Grove nightclub, I used a filter called stardust to create a 1970s/1980s club effect with its yellow and red strobe light beams. For Ralston’s Discount Liquor store, I employed a cartoon filter to create a comic effect on the deep red and yellow textures of the two-story building. For the pink storefront building, I chose a filter called cozy because it highlighted the pink hue of the building and shaded the street pink, too. For the green storefront building, featuring a sign advertising Donny Hathaway, a deceased singer, I used the light flare filter, which created bright white beams that coincided with the sunlight and the white clouds that clustered, in the right side of the frame. For the white grocery store with black bars, I opted for the vignette filter because it created a black frame around the edges creating a vintage and slightly abandoned look.
