Tiny homes have recently taken the housing market by storm, appearing all over rural and urban America as an affordable and eco-conscious solution to an increasingly tight housing supply. Generally between 100 and 400 square feet, tiny homes come in all shapes and sizes: From small portable cabins on wheels to trailers to “micro-apartments” that have appeared in San Francisco and New York City.
This home I designed for a lot in San Francisco, California. It is a tiny-home of 360 sq ft with an accessible multi-story green roof, nestled into the hills.
I chose to design a green roofed tiny home because in the highly populated area of San Francisco, they can be highly beneficial, and i'll talk more about that later. Tiny homes are also generally cheaper to build, so homeowners are not burdened by a mortgage for their whole lives, which is why it would be beneficial for a small family wanting to affordably own their own home in this busy city. This home can comfortably fit a family of 3, with the "master" bedroom downstairs and a lofted bedroom for a child. Although this house is small, it is big enough to include the needed amenities of a home. There’s 2 sleeping areas, a full bathroom with washer/dryer unit, a modern kitchen, storage and spots for eating and relaxing.
