After doing design work for them in the past, the Stewardship committee of Saint Michael’s Catholic Church in Spalding, NE asked if I could create a new magnet design for them to disperse to all the parishioners. The last time I designed something for them the committee had voted on a quote that they wanted to be used for the magnet. However, this time around all they had was a general theme when they spoke with me about making the new magnet image. The message they wanted to give to the parishioners was morality. The committee had liked the text incorporated into the design in the last piece I created so they asked if I would find a good quote to add to it. That is where I decided to start, is by finding the right quote. I opened up Google and began searching for morality quotes. I found a couple quotes that I sent back to the committee. “Wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it. Right is right even if no one is doing it.”, is

the quote that was used in the final design. I immediately had this image in my head of a two-sided figure part angel part demon. Blending the figures together is where I was struggling the most. I wanted them to be separate parts to the same figure. Originally I

designed it so that the angel half was blue and the demon was red. The committee members did not like the color gradient from the blue to red because it reminded them of the PRIDE flag too much. So I went back to Illustrator and changed the colors to black and white. Originally I used a blending style that looked like a stained glass window. That style felt too bulky for the black and white image so I played around until I found the pixilated texture that I used in the end. Although the committee didn’t like the multiple colored figure they still wanted color on the magnet so to compromise I made the “Wrong is wrong” in red and “Right is right” in blue. For the finishing touch the committee sent me the new Spalding Academy logo to put in the corner along with my name and what year I graduated.
