The Basta Courtyard

First Perception - An intimidating garden with imposing stairs and walled rooms.
Personal Interpretation - These features overpower the remaining elements present in the garden.
Analysis - The existing floor plan (right side) resembles the floor plan of a traditional Arab house (left side).
Analysis - The majority of users are elderly people who are restricted to gather at the entrance of the garden due to the imposing stairs (orange).
This gathering point leaves them a bit secluded from the main activities. The yellow zone shows the vehicular concentration around the different stores.
Thinking Process - The two main issues were the lack of accessibility and difficult circulation. Therefore it was most important to relocate the entrance of the garden as well as create a smooth pathway connecting the different levels.
It was important to have dry stone wall terraces in order to re-incorporate some traditional garden practices.
The new design invites people of all ages to gather, play and enjoy each others company.
The selection of soothing colors in the softscape palette creates a familiar Mediterranean atmosphere.
