Sans Serif and Serif Compositions | Project 01 | Art 230
Project 01 | Designing with Glyphs
We were asked to create two abstract typographic compositions using the basic principles of design as well as some specific guidelines. One design was to be created using Neue Haas Grotesk Bold, and the other using Stempel Garamond Roman. Each design was to use only black and white and was to contain at least two black and two white glyphs. We could use between 5 and 8 alphanumeric glyphs, but no punctuation. In addition, there had to be at least 5 unique glyphs with at least 5 different elements of typographic anatomy. Each composition should contain a focal point and should use negative space in an interesting and appealing way. Additionally, each composition should be well structured, with careful attention to detail and should provide sufficient variety and interest. In short, "The finished composition should feel complete and harmonious where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts" (BYU-I Project Brief).
