Revitalization of the Los Mateos

Los Mateos – district in Cartagena (Spain) with approximately 3000 of inhabitants. Despite of its closeness to the city`s center now it is suffering from marginalisation. The main problems of area are bad connections with other part of the city and inside the district itself, lack of public spaces, low quality of dwelling conditions. Object of historical heritage – castle Los Moros is now abandoned.

Proposal includes:

– Creation of the connected grid of parks and other open public spaces. Adding of the bicycle and pedestrian routes to the structure.

– Changing in the streets` structure. Creation of two roundabouts in the North part for better and faster connectivity. Development of main street-boulevard.

– Construction of almost 80.000 m2 of new dwellings and 10.000 m2 of public buildings . Renovation of the existing ones. Maintenance of heritage sites.

– Optimization of public transport routes. Creation the new tramway route “Seaport – University – Los Mateos – Hospital” on the rails of existing railway branch.
