Neue Haas Grotesk Bold "Creation #1" and Stempel Garamond LT Std "Creation #2"
GLYPH-ART
For our Typography class, each student was asked to design a number of projects using only alphanumeric letter-forms of Neue Haas Grotesk Display Pro Bold, and Stempel Garamond LT Std Roman. We were allowed 5 - 8 separate glyphs and 5 had to be original, meaning we were only allowed to repeat the same glyph in its capitol or lowercase form. At least two glyphs had to be white or black, and we couldn't use outlines or colors.

In Creation #1
I used the lowercase letters of y, g, and i in black, and I used lowercase f, and a, in white. This design started out as a stack of glyphs off center toward the left. While I liked that design, I felt that this final design was more visually interesting. The eye is drawn to the bowl of the g by the white letters and by the tittle, or dot, of the i.

This project also started out differently and I found that working with the black background more difficult. Finding an interesting place for my black letters was a challenge. Here I have capitol S and lowercase s combined with a capitol O, and U. My black letters are lowercase r, and i. On this final design, I finally like my placement of the r and i. I use the tittle, or dot, of the i while the stem is camouflaged within the black background. The shoulder of the r is wedged seamlessly between the s and the U. Although the tittle of the i is small, my vision climbs up the other letters to look at it.
