The Big Strawberry

TECHNIQUE: Photography and Digital Illustration

PROCESS: Using natural lighting coming in from the window, AV ISO 12800. The strawberry was cut up as small as possible. Wacom tablet was used to draw digital illustrations on Photoshop. The layers were then replicated and grouped together several times.

REASONING: I was thinking of the festival the big pineapple and create the big ‘enter fruit that I found in my fridge here’ and experiment with it. I found strawberries and thought how I could transform a strawberry into an entertainment space.

REFLECTION: The high quality photograph and the drawn little people work well together, the sliced fruit was difficult to cut however, the image works well with the illustrations.
They Look Like Ants from Up Here

TECHNIQUE: Photography and Digital Illustration

PROCESS: An image was taken above the library using a Canon EOS digital camera in the afternoon, providing soft lighting. A photo of an ant was taken then traced using paint tools on Photoshop. This ant was then replicated several times on the images where it was rotated at specific points. A drop shadow was then applying with relation to the time of day.

REASONING: I was taking pictures of the sunset when I looked down and thought that some of the people look like ants from up here, which is why I decided to experiment with this.

REFLECTION: Overall the image is effective however, I would have like to have tried this at a different time of day so I could play with shading more. This image captures exactly what I was thinking in relation to scale.
Playing with Light

TECHNIQUE: Photography

PROCESS: AV exposure -3 ISO 100. I turned my lanterns on and took a picture, slowly wiggling the camera to the side as it was processing the picture to create this light image.

REASONING: I tried this, not knowing why my camera was taking so long to process, or why the images were always blurry. I wanted to explore what I could do with this type of technique.

REFLECTION:  I was impressed with the raw image as it did not need any Photoshop. However, there were many attempts to get this right as it felt like blind drawing most of the time.
Spiders Clothes Line

TECHNIQUE: Photography and Digital Illustration

PROCESS: Image was taken in the afternoon (4pm) when lighting is yellowish in colour, which brings out the warmer tones in this flower. I attempted to get as much detail of the flower (and its surroundings) as possible. The image was taken into Photoshop where the brush tool was used with 1pt line weight to draw on spider web.

REASONING: I was inspired by the colours of the flower, the lighting and the textures. I was originally going to use this as a texture picture but then I noticed a spider web and wondered if it could be a clothes line (it’s a sunny spot for a tiny clothes line).

REFLECTION: The subtly of the clothes line works well as it does not distract too much from the flower. It also blends well with the spider web like it is a spider web itself.
Shade for cityscapes

TECHNIQUE: Photography

PROCESS: A black and white image was taken at the same time of day (midday), on different clear days. The building image was taken into Photoshop where the sky was cropped (magic wand and lasso) out and layered over the canopy image, the scales were not changed. Contrast and brightness was also adjusted in both images.

REASONING: It was hot on the day I was taking photographs of reflections when I thought about standing under a tree for shade. Then this scale image popped into my head so I decided to experiment.

REFLECTION: Overall the images blended well together as it effectively shows that the buildings are also being shaded. As the canopy isn’t scaled down, it effectively changes the scale of the whole image.
