Week 7 - Light and Scale

Title: Butterfly in the Bathroom
Technique: Long Exposure Photography
Process: This image was produced by setting my camera up on a tripod with a 5 second exposure. I then used a red head torch to draw a butterfly, ensuring the reflection was caught in the mirror. I then used Photoshop to highlight the colour and increase the blacks to help block out the surroundings.
ISO: 800
Shutter speed: 5 Seconds
f stop: 2.0
Reasoning: I wanted to create two of the same image in one shot, showing two angels of the same light painting without directly copying it using Photoshop.
Reflection: This image is pretty cool but in hindsight, I would have like to have produced a more detailed image. The limiting factor was the amount of reflective light produced by the head torch on the white bathroom tiles. If I had left the shutter open any longer, the surrounding light crept into the image, drawing away from the subject. If I were to do this again, i would probably black out the bathroom allowing for a longer exposure.

Title: Liopleurodon for Scale?
Technique: Close up DSLR Photography
Process: I used a 24mm lens on my 60D to with a 2.0 f stop in order to get close and create a small depth of field. Used my phone lighting from the right hand side.
ISO: 200
Shutter speed: 250
f stop: 2.0
Reasoning:I wanted to create the illusion that this figure was sitting in a pool of water in a large rocky area, looking all prehistoric. I used my phone light to try and give the appearance of sunrise reflecting over the water and against the rock (which was actually a tree).
Reflection: I think I did well at making the toy look like it was in a scenario that it wasn't, giving it the illusion of size. To further assist in this, I should have placed small branches to represent trees and maybe some pebbles to look like boulders. This would have help give a reference of scale.

Title: Fairy Lite
Technique: Long Exposure DSLR Photography/Photoshop
Process: I used a 24mm lens on my 60D to with a a mid range f stop and 2 second shutter speed. I had assistance with spinning the fairy lights around.
ISO: 800
Shutter speed: 2 seconds
f stop: 10
Reasoning: I had no specific intention other than to pic up some crazy colours and shapes.
Reflection: I tried a number of settings to try and capture this image. I found the other light from houses and restaurants etc hindered the process. This was sorted in photoshop by editing out background light and creating high contrast. I took a large amount of photos with different swings and spins of the fairy lights as well as lighting modes and this was by far the most outstanding to me.

Title: Kangaroo Point and Shoot
Technique: DSLR photography/photoshop
Process: I used a 50mm lens on my 60D to with a 1.8f stop in order to create a small depth of field. I then used photoshop to up the saturation and blur out everything that I didn't want in focus which was almost everything but the ferry.
ISO: 100
Shutter speed: 1000
f stop: 1.8
Reasoning: I went out with the intention for a tilt shift shot. I don't own a tilt shift lens because they are a great way to play with scale and make something look like a model version of it.
Reflection: This was my first ever attempt at tilt shift and I'm really pleased. I knew the main theories behind it before I took the shot; focusing on one particular subject, tried to get colours that would look great with over saturation and finally, get a large area with things of different sizes. If I were to do it again, I'd like to try when the sun isn't at its highest point. I think a bit more shadow may help to make the 'fake' tilt shift look more real.

Title: Nothing but Smoke and Mirrors
Technique: Long Exposure DSLR Photography
Process: I used a 24mm lens on my 60D to with a a mid range f stop and 2 second shutter speed. I had someone hold a white light under a cigarette which created the blue light.
ISO: 800
Shutter speed: 2 seconds
f stop: 10
Reasoning: I was out camping and saw my head torch shine through cigarette smoke which looked interesting.
Reflection: This image is quite abstract but the contrast of the blue smoke and the light in the background.
