Week 6 - Light & Scale

Wilting

Technique: DSLR photography with macro lens, post-production Photoshop

Process: After experimentation in my Image Production tutorial, I found the best way to capture light and scale through macro photography was by photographing plants. This photo image I captured at home. These flowers were part of a flower arrangement on the kitchen table, but I photographed them outside.

Reasoning: There had been a flower arrangement in a box sitting on the kitchen table for a couple of weeks and while at first glance they looked fresh, upon a closer look, they were starting to deteriorate. For this reason, I thought these flowers may be slightly more interested to capture rather than the planted ones at uni.

Reflection: While I really like how this photograph turned out, I think it would be better if I moved the box so that the sun hit the centre of one of the flowers. Where the sun hits in the photo is where your eye is immediately drawn and now that is the edge of one of the flowers. However, I do like how clear the details of each petal appear. It makes for a very interesting photograph.
Pink Sunflowers

Technique: DSLR photography with macro lens, post-production Photoshop

Process: This photograph followed the same process as the previous one. Once I had taken the flower arrangement outside, I placed the box on a little table outside and I positioned myself at different angles to capture a wide variety of images of the flowers

Reasoning: The reasoning for this image for this image is the same as the previous image.

Reflection: I find this image interesting. Only a little bit of sunlight creeps through, but that part is not in focus. The petals in the left-hand corner of the image are the focus point of the photograph. This allows you to see very clearly the details of the petals and the beginning of their deterioration. Similar to the previous image, it would be good to have the part the sun highlights as the focus point of the image.
Succulent Details

Technique: DSLR Photography with macro lens, post production Photoshop

Process: This photograph was taken during my Image Production tutorial. Given the opportunity to expand on this week’s topic in tutorial time, I looked for interesting plants to photograph. Being my first time using a macro lens, I found plants the best way to practice using it.

Reasoning: I had never taken much notice of all the details that could be found in succulents. They have a lot of different layers and I thought the best way to clearly see this was through macro photography.

Reflection: I really like this image. It clearly shows the details of the succulent being photographed and, thanks to Photoshop, the deep red in the image comes up beautifully. While I think this is a good image, the succulent is hidden from the sun. Compared to the other images featured in this week’s collection, it doesn’t have an interesting light source making this image a little boring.
Christmas Dreams

Technique: DSLR Photography with macro lens, post production Photoshop

Process: Like the previous image, this photography was captured during tutorial time, where I spent time searching for interesting details in different plants that I could capture with a macro lens.

Reasoning: I chose to photography this flower because I found all the different elements of it very interesting. There are little flowers in different colours and stages of blooming as well as little green parts that look like berries.

Reflection: This photograph was quite difficult to capture. The sun was coming from behind the flower and before lowering the ISO, it was difficult the see the details of the flower. I don’t think this is the best image in this week’s series.
Fairy Sized

Technique: DSLR Photography with macro lens, post production photoshop

Process: I was searching for interesting plants to practice macro photography, when I stumbled across these delicate little flowers.

Reasoning: These flowers were very small and delicate. I thought they would create a very pretty photograph. The contrast between the green and the pink was another reason I thought these flowers would come up well in a photograph.

Reflection: This was my first attempt at using a macro lens and I am pleased with how the photograph came out. It captures the tiny details within the flowers and where the sun hits the flower, is the focus of the photo. I do think this photograph could be clearer.
