JOURNEY
- an experimental mix
Learning about Bruce Mau and his philosophy on design has been an incredibly inspirational, informative and insightful experience. Reading about him has challenged my own views and perspective on design, introducing elements which I had not thought about prior to reading about him.
One of these is Bruce Mau’s view of design as multidisciplinary. His idea for Massive Change was to communicate with people from different disciplines, with different skill-sets, who each were changing the world in some way, even if they were unaware of it. What stood out for me was that even though some of these people were from disciplines that seemed far from design (in my perspective, technicians for example), in his perspective they were all designers. This opened my eyes to see design in places where I never thought it existed.
Another point that stood out to me was in Bruce Mau’s “Incomplete Manifesto for Growth”. One of the points he makes is about process driven outcome, where the emphasis is on not just making the end goal the main focus of an endeavor but rather focusing more on the process itself and the things that are learned and discoveries that are made during the process. This definitely challenged me in that often when I have an idea of what I would like to achieve, I would strive to reach that intended outcome without allowing for flexibility and letting the working process lead to new discoveries and ideas which could alter that intended outcome or plan that I had in mind to achieve.
“3. Process is more important than outcome. When the outcome drives the process we will only ever go to where we’ve already been. If process drives outcome we may not know where we’re going, but we will know we want to be there.”
“4. Love your experiments (as you would an ugly child). Joy is the engine of growth. Exploit the liberty in casting your work as beautiful experiments, iterations, attempts, trials, and errors. Take the long view and allow yourself the fun of failure every day.”

“6. Capture accidents. The wrong answer is the right answer in search of a different question. Collect wrong answers as part of the process. Ask different questions.”

Journey
In accordance to this philosophy of putting more focus on the journey of discovery rather than on the outcome at the end of the journey, I titled the album “Journey”. Each of the songs selected for this album have animated music videos. The reason for this selection is an appreciation of animation as a medium to tell stories, tackle different relevant issues as well as to inspire and evoke emotion (which was the subject matter of my first blog assignment entry).
