ECOLOGICAL & EDIBLE CITIES: PAPA
In this ‘Ecological and Edible Cities’ project it explore ways of rethinkingthe landscape to construct an ecological and edible environment for the humansand non-humans, contextualized in Orakei, a land that has recently beenreclaimed by the Maori tribe, Ngati Whatua.

‘Papa’ in Maori belief gives birth to all things, including humankind, and provides the physical and spiritual basis for the living. Life is born inthe womb of the Papatuanuku and returned there after death. However the fall offorests and the human development of the lands were a catastrophe for thetraditional Maori people because of their view to the world. The loss of treeswas the cause of destruction leading to the loss of foundation and stability, which creates the modern standing earth today where it lacks the ability tokeep up a sustainable future.

The ‘Folding Bench’ design explores the folding and shapes of the land tocreate ways to connect people back to the earth like how a Maori ‘Hangi’creates a successful platform connection between the land and the living.
While the new steps following the contours of the land on the hillprovides a easier and safer pathway for the people going up and down the dampsoil hill. It also provides a resting space for weavers working out in thefields though out the day.
