AtlantiqueBeach, Fire Island (NY): Better Times to Come

This personal project is a short video born on a "perfect summer day" at Atlantique, one of Fire Island's wide, beautiful and popular public beaches, during the summer of 2012. While watching incredibly detailed footage of TV News Chopper12 video of post-Sandy hurricane damage, I realized that some of the worst destruction happened at the exact same location where I'd spent those carefree days, a mere 3 months ago. It will take humans so much time and effort to rebuild, and Nature a long time as well, to regenerate this devastated area back to its clean, inviting beauty of recent memory. We have all heard much sad news and seen so much dark, shocking imagery of this storm's aftermath lately; and I urgently felt a need to envision something positive; to compose an 'answer song' to the fury and trauma of last week's events...

With this video, I want to share my vision of not only better days from the past - but my deep faith in and true hope for better days in the future. I'm especially touched by how our children - the next generation of Earth's stewards - will inherit the effects of global climate extremes. I believe they deserve to continue to rediscover, enjoy and find pleasure and solace in places that will always remain the most special and magical to us (like Fire Island!), and I wish they may develop a lasting, strong sense of belonging there, even as they risk becoming more vulnerable. This is my "Get Well Soon" card to everyone affected -- here's to your renewal, restoration and a healing process of recovery.
