Network ID, Seasonal (Fall, Winter), "Smithsonian Channel"
The Brief: select one broadcast network to create (2) 5 second seasonal network IDs. It may be holiday-specific or seasonal (winter, spring, summer, fall).

From the moodboard: "Winter spreads its icy fingers across the landscape. A frosty stillness falls everywhere but on these artworks. The painting/sculpture comes to life -- branches crackle across the screen, frigid stones multiply, textured with the season’s rime. The camera pulls back to reveal that the arctic scene is contained to a frame on the wall of a toasty warm Smithsonian gallery wall."

The premise of the piece is that the Smithsonian Channel offers the viewer context for art/culture and gives it dimensionality. We visit the work of two of my favorite artists and enter those worlds.

3D setup
Frame 1, "Fall"
Clipped out a bunch of leaves for this. If I had to redo this shot, I would probably use actual footage of the ground and leaves instead of still image.

Frame 2, "Fall"
The sound for each season changes from outdoor environmental, to ambient gallery noise as the animation segues from one locale to the next.

Frame 3, "Winter"
I watched "Alex Katz: Five Hours" (a documentary in which Katz paints one of his signature paintings) and I tried to replicate Katz's strokes using Prismacolor markers on vellum. I scanned the individual trees and used those as textures on 2d planes in a 3d set. The camera dollys out through the forest and breaks the fourth wall into the gallery. It was a lot harder than expected to get a smooth transition from the 3d shot to the 2d.
