Drachman Institute Study for CDC
A food desert is a district with little or no access to foods needed to maintain a healthy diet but often served by plenty of fast food restaurants.

Through the CPPW grant funding, the Drachman Institute is informing the community as to how the built environment can prevent obesity. Our design work prevents obesity by encouraging physical activity, increasing access to healthy foods, and by developing schools, worksites, faith-based settings and health care venues as centers of wellness.

Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) is a locally driven initiative supporting 50 communities to tackle obesity and tobacco use—two leading preventable causes of death and disability in the United States. More than 50 million people—or one in six Americans—live in a city, town, county, or tribal community that benefits from this initiative. This work was done in collaboration with Dr. Chris Sharp
