Much of the success of the Ace Hotel chain would be laid at the feet of the late Alex Calderwood, who passed away November 2013. Today there are nine Ace Hotels in Seattle, Palm Springs, Portland, London, Panama City, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, New Orleans and New York City.
Stated on Wikipedia.com, the first Ace Hotel opened in 1999 and Calderwood had stated a goal of opening a new Ace Hotel every "one to two years". According to Calderwood, the style and furnishing of each Ace property is designed to reflect its location, with an eye towards re-imagining properties that are “challenged.”
Each of the Ace Hotel locations have stories behind them that anyone would find interesting. The one that caught my eye was the Ace Hotel in Portland, Oregon. Before it was converted from the Clyde Hotel the lobby was used in a scene of the movie Drugstore Cowboy. The Ace Hotel New York in Midtown Manhattan, lives in a building formerly known as the Breslin Hotel, originally built in 1904. However bustling the lobby gets, the hotel is a welcome break from the mayhem that is New York City — full of local art, thoughtful details and the best beds in the universe.
