Project 3  —  Portrero Hill Library

Architecture 100A  —  Fall 2016
UC Berkeley
Prof. Lisa Iwamoto

This project is about implied objects. These implied objects are achieved through the boolean operation of thin triangular wedges that slice through to create separation. Surfaces denoted in mauve are the resultant of said boolean operation. This separation produces divisions in various volumes which create implied, singular forms or objects in space, but they rejoin and merge again  elsewhere and make a whole. As a result, these implied objects found in many parts of the project, thus, prescribe the library’s essential programs.
The scheme is then followed by the problem of light. Treating voids as solids, the language that follows is, thus, a 3-dimensional treatment of the enclosures. Along the same lines of continuity through the separation and convergence of implied objects, the 3D enclosure similarly conveys continuity from solid to a solid-like void.
