LACMA Project for UC Berkeley 2016

In this project my student partner, Zhaoxuan Wang and I rebuild the Los Angeles County Museum of Art through a process of Reflection, Fracturing, Assemble and Narration.

We start the process by reflecting on the environment that the Museum will sit in Wilshire Boulevard and relate that to the neighboring buildings heights upon Wilshire. We also look at the various social media draws of the city of Los Angeles, so that the new museum is iconic in stature in comparison to its neighbors, and has views in directions of greatest interest to the area. By doing this we will create a vision of what LACMA means to the local community.
Next we decide look to precedetns in recent art history in our rational to rebuild a museum. The inspiration found in the post modernists and futurists give us momentum to Fracture our vision of LACMA so we can rebuild the museum in our own idealized way. An idealized way that relays upon a jagged structure to support the museum and lead museum visitors through the collection.
With the new structre in place we create a series of custom built narratives for the museum so that visitors can find tangential artworks based on artists whose work they already appreciate. This narrative is supported by the fractured interior hallways that create a jagged pathway reflecting the sharp angles of the exterior shell of the new buildings. You can see this narrative and the path in the plans below.
Here the structure of the new buildings is highlighted, a series of 120 foot tall steel trusses that connect the main cores of the museum. The steel work is hidden inside sheer walls that create the gallery spaces for the museum.

A color palette is chosen based on the artwork of post modernist Barbara Kruger.

After this image you will find some renderings of the museum.
Here are photographs of the model that was made to support the drawings and help the viewer to see our vision for the museum. This model is done at a 1"=25' scale.
