Melting Clay Head by Eleanor Rushe
Overview:
For this project, I wanted to create a 3D clay piece which in an impactful way      showed the monstrosity that is climate change. I decided to create a melting head to show, that by melting the ice-caps, we are melting ourselves because the increase in temperature is going to have devastating effects on the human race.

The process:
I made a preparatory sheet to show my planning and thought process. I hoped to make it a quite graphic and gruesome piece. I drew a front and a side profile of a melting head so that I could be more accurate in the way I sculpted the clay and I also studied a normal human face to make sure the foundation and dimensions of my clay head would be correct.
I started making the clay by creating a normal face and then eventually started to drag down the clay in places and cut into it to make the hollows. I created a puddle as the base.
After making my clay head I was unsure of how I wanted to paint it so I practised painting a sample using skin tones and the other using blue and silver acrylic paint. These both helped me visualise the finished piece in alternative ways. I thought about painting it in skin tones as I felt it would be more realistic and terrifying. I also explored painting it in silver and blue as this was reminiscent of melting ice and its effect on mankind. Having considered both, I picked the skin toned version as I felt the visual impact was stronger. In the end though, I actually preferred when it was unpainted...

Overall, I am very pleased with this piece (it is a weird one though, not sure where to put it in my house without scaring visitors!!)

Please see below for the finished piece. Enjoy!
