ROM POSTER
INTRO
The assignment was to create an interesting poster for one of the ROM's permanent collections. The poster was to include artifacts directly from the exhibit and the exhibits name. The composition should tell a story and entice people to visit these often forgotten permanent collections.

MATERIALS
Camera
Adobe Illustrator and pre-made templates
Canson paper
Coloured pencils
White paint marker

CREATIVE PROCESS
The assignment required a trip to the ROM to collect primary research and photograph artifacts for the poster. As I walked through the exhibits I thought about what pieces I could manipulate or rearrange to create an interesting composition. I then used a thumbnail template on illustrator to crop and play with the pieces of my image until I found a composition I liked. I then used a larger template on illustrator to arrange my final composition with pre-made guidelines that would later help me to breakdown my drawing into smaller parts.
My final choice image I took at the ROM to work with to create my poster.

After some initial pencil and paper thumbnail sketches ( not pictured) I moved to Adobe illustrator to put together some more precise versions of my chosen composition idea.
After I was happy with my approved thumbnail, I created a larger version on Illustrator and added in a red guidelines template that would later help me to piece-by-piece transfer my composition onto Canson paper using coloured pencils. This is my final composition rendered on Illustrator, with guidelines.
PRODUCTION METHODS/WORKFLOW
Before I started my final drawing, I create a colour palette to making choosing/creating colours would be easier. I then printed off the illustrator file with the guidelines (pictured above) and used tracing paper to graphite transfer key lines and shapes onto my canson. I drew in the image piece-by piece until it all came together, then erased the guidelines for a clean look. Lastly, I used a white paint marker to fill in the ROM logo and the text at the bottom.
My colour palette, complete with pencil number labels.
My final composition.
CONCLUSION
This was a very time consuming project with many steps. It showed me that following proper steps and not skipping anything really pays off in terms of the quality of the final work. The transfer of the composition to the Canson was intimidating at first, but the guidelines proved to be helpful in the end, because smaller portions are easier to understand. I would have to say following all the steps, including creating a number of thumbnails, is important and must not be overlooked.
